Fact Sheet: Medi-Share

What?

  • Medi-Share, a program of Christian Care Ministry, is a member-based, healthcare-sharing program in which Christians voluntarily and directly share financial resources to pay one another's medical expenses. 
  • Medi-Share is not health insurance, so neither Medi-Share nor its members have a legal obligation to pay another member's medical expenses. However, since its inception in 1993, members have faithfully shared their resources to pay all eligible medical expenses.
  • Members of healthcare sharing ministries, like Medi-Share, are exempt from the individual mandate to purchase health insurance as outlined in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (or Healthcare Law). Medi-Share members are in compliance with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (or Healthcare Law) and do not have to purchase insurance or face financial penalties. 
  • Since 1993, Medi-Share members have shared more than $1.1 billion in medical expenses. And, because of its large network of providers, members have saved an additional $587 million in medical costs.   
  • Medi-Share was designed for Christians who agree on a specific set of biblical values and lifestyles. Currently, there are more than 266,000 members.  

Why?

  • Medi-Share members are in compliance with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and do not have to purchase or face financial penalties.
  • As outlined in section 2B on page 128 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, health care sharing ministries are exempt from the health insurance mandate outlined in the federal law.
  • Because Medi-Share members are committed to healthy, biblical lifestyles, the monthly cost is affordable and provides options to fit nearly every budget.
  • The average monthly share cost is about $350 a month for a family.
  • Medi-Share members have flexibility in choosing doctors. Medi-Share members have access to a large network of more than half a million medical providers.

How?

  • Medi-Share facilitates the sharing of medical costs between members so they can support fellow members rather than a for-profit company. 
  • Medi-Share members show their membership card each time they visit the doctor. Medical providers send the bills to Medi-Share. Medi-Share determines which bills are eligible for sharing according to member-approved guidelines. 
  • Since 1993, Christian Care Ministry has been successful in facilitating the sharing of more than $1.1 billion dollars in medical costs.
