TRANSCRIPTS

Billy Graham on Death

Ohio Stadium, Cincinnati, June 27, 2002 (TRT 0:54)

"It has been a difficult time, but there were a few times that I thought that I was dying. I remember one night in the hospital, two nights in the hospital I thought I was dying, and my whole life came before me, and I didn't say to the Lord, 'I'm a preacher. I've preached to many people.' I said, 'Oh Lord, I'm a sinner. I still need your forgiveness. I still need the cross.' And I asked...and I asked the Lord to give me peace in my heart, and he did...a wonderful peace that hasn't left me till this day, and that's been nearly two years ago."

Billy Graham on Getting to Heaven

Yankee Stadium, New York, June 15, 1957 (TRT 0:33)

"There is no other way. Man cannot be saved by bread alone. Man cannot be saved by earning his way, by working his way, for by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves. It's the gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast! There is only one way that men can get to heaven...one road. Jesus said it was a narrow road. He said the gate was narrow, and it's the cross, and I must come to his cross."

Central Park, New York, Sept. 22, 1991 (TRT 0:31)

"If you haven't repented of your sins you'll never see the inside of the kingdom of heaven, and then you come by faith. For by grace are ye saved through faith and not of works, lest any man should boast. You'll never be able to work your way to heaven. You have to come by faith in Christ, and you come by the grace of God. Grace means its something you don't deserve. You can't work for. You come by faith in him. That's how I came, by simple child-like faith."

Billy Graham on Race Relations

Photo with Martin Luther King Jr., Chicago, 1962 (TRT 0:10)

Johannesburg, March 25, 1973 (TRT 0:35)

"Now, Jesus was a man. He was human. He was not a white man. He was not a black man. He came from that part of the world that touches Africa and Asia and Europe, and he probably had a brown skin. Christianity is not a white man's religion, and don't let anybody ever tell you that it's white or black. Christ belongs to all people. He belongs to the whole world!"

McCormick Place, Chicago, June 13, 1971 (TRT 0:53)

"And don't ever forget another thing. Jesus belongs to Africa as much as he does to Europe and Asia. He was born in that part of the world that touches Africa and Asia and Europe, and Jesus was not a white man like me, nor was he as black as some of you. We don't know what the color of his skin, but it must have been a dark color like the people of his day, because he was man like them. Don't ever say it's a white man's religion or a black man's religion. It's a world religion. He belongs to the world!"

Billy Graham on Other Religions

Earl's Court, London, June 27, 1966 (TRT 0:52)

"Religion without a personal encounter with Jesus Christ will not save the soul, and it will not bring the peace that your soul longs for. Millions are searching for God through religion and not finding it. You've got to know Christ for yourself, and when you come to know Christ for yourself there's a peace and a fulfillment, and life takes on a purpose, and there's a sense of forgiveness of your sins, and there's a joy unspeakable and full of glory. You may be a member of some other religion. You may be Catholic, Protestant, Jewish. You may be Hindu, Muslim...whatever your background...you may not have any religion. You come to Christ. I'm not asking you to come to a particular church. I'm asking you to come to the person of Jesus Christ."

Flushing Meadows Corona Park, New York, June 25, 2005 (TRT 0:42)

"Jesus said, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life.' And then he said an interesting thing: 'No man comes to the Father except through me.' That's the way to God, is through Jesus. In Acts the fourth chapter he says, 'Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we can be saved.' You know, Buddha said at the end of his life, 'I'm still searching for truth.' Jesus is the truth. He is the life."

Billy Graham on Fame

From Evangelist to the World documentary (TRT 0:24)

"I despise all this attention on me. I wish we could publicize the meetings in some way in which my name were not used. I'm not trying to bring people to myself nor am I trying to interest people in me, but I know that God has sent me out as a warrior on the five continents to preach the Gospel, and I must continue until he gives the signal that I'm to stop."

Flushing Meadows Corona Park, New York, June 26, 2005 (TRT 0:21)

"You've come forward and are standing here or wherever you are. You haven't come to me. You haven't come to the pastors that are here tonight. You've come to Christ. You've come to Jesus."

Billy Graham on Sin

Canvas Cathedral, Los Angeles, 1949 (TRT 0:55)

"First of all you have to meet God with life. I do not believe that any man...that any man can solve the problems of life without Jesus Christ. There are tremendous marital problems. There are physical problems. There are financial problems. There are problems of sin and habit that cannot be solved outside the person of our Lord, Jesus Christ. I'm glad to tell you tonight that Jesus Christ the Son of God has an answer to every problem that you face. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, has an answer to every burden that you carry. He can forgive every sin, break any coil and rope and chain of habit that may be binding you at this moment, and stop any lashing conscience that may be bothering you because of your sins. Yes, Jesus has the answer to life's problems."

Mile High Stadium, Denver, July 22, 1987 (TRT 0:29)

"If you call upon him, he will forgive! If you repent, he will forgive! If you turn to Christ and trust only in the cross and the blood of Christ, he will forgive, and God's forgiveness goes a lot further than yours and mine. We say, "Oh yes, I forgive you." God calls it justification...just as though you had never sinned. You are placed in the sight of God as though you'd never committed a single sin, and the Scripture says he cannot even remember your sins."

Billy Graham on Suffering and Tragedy

Washington National Cathedral, Washington, Sept. 14, 2001 (TRT 0:56)

"I've been asked hundreds of times in my life why God allows tragedy and suffering. I have to confess that I really do not know the answer totally even to my own satisfaction. I have to accept by faith that God is sovereign, and he's a God of love and mercy and compassion in the midst of suffering. The Bible says that God is not the author of evil. It speaks of evil as a mystery. In I Thessalonians 2:7 it talks about the mystery of iniquity. The Old Testament prophet Jeremiah said, 'The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?' He asked that question, 'Who can understand it,' and that's one reason we each need God in our lives."

Billy Graham at the Billy Graham Library Dedication

Billy Graham Library, Charlotte, May 31, 2007 (TRT 0:36)

"Listening to all these speeches...I know they all meant it, but I feel terribly small and humbled by it all. And I feel I don’t deserve, because it’s been a whole team of people that have worked together, prayed together, traveled together, believed that God was going to do wonderful things together....

"This building here behind me is just a building. It’s an instrument. It’s a tool for the Gospel. The primary thing is the Gospel of Christ, which Franklin has already outlined. I’m very grateful for his leadership. Pray that God will use this to speak to many people who come through this facility. And I need your prayers, and I want to thank you again for coming today. God bless you. Thank you."

My Hope America

"The Cross," 2013 (TRT 2:07)

"As I look back over my life, it’s full of surprises. I never thought I would become friends with people in different countries, all over the world. I see how God’s hand guided me. When I began preaching many years ago, it was not with any thoughts that I’d be preaching to large audiences. God has done this.

"Our country’s in great need of a spiritual awakening. Oh, there’ve been times that I’ve wept, as I’ve gone from city to city and I’ve seen how far people have wandered from God. Of all the things that I’ve seen and heard, there’s only one message that can change people’s lives and hearts.

"I want to tell people about the meaning of the cross. Not the cross that hangs on a wall or around someone’s neck…but the real cross of Christ. It’s scarred and blood-stained. His was a rugged cross. I know that many will react to this message, but it is the truth. And with all my heart, I want to leave you with the truth: that he loves you, [is] willing to forgive you of all your sins."
