N.C. Relief Org. Sends Plane Loaded with 105 Tons of Gifts to Help Young Victims of China’s Quake

Samaritan's Purse Fills 747 in Charlotte—Airlift Has Now Arrived in China

International Christian relief organization Samaritan's Purse continues to provide help to those devastated by last year's earthquake in China, this time reaching out to the youngest victims of the disaster. On April 25, just a few weeks away from the one-year anniversary of the quake, a chartered 747 cargo jet flew out of Charlotte filled with 65,000 Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts—which will be delivered to children in China who are still struggling to recover.

"Tens of thousands of children and their families were left homeless and many others were killed by the quake in the Sichuan Province," said Franklin Graham, president and CEO of Samaritan's Purse. "We hope this Operation Christmas Child relief flight filled with gifts will be a source of comfort and joy as they continue to rebuild their lives."

Last year immediately after the disaster, Samaritan's Purse partnered with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and chartered a cargo jet, filling it with urgently needed supplies to help people in Chengdu, China. The cargo jet was loaded with emergency aid including enough high-grade plastic sheeting to provide temporary shelter to nearly 5,000 people, along with six water filtration systems capable of producing a total of some 60,000 gallons of clean water per day, medical supplies, hygiene kits and blankets.

Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan's Purse, has delivered more than 68 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in need in 145 countries. Although National Collection Week is November 16 – 23, 2009, Operation Christmas Child is not limited to just the holiday season. It is a year-round project, requiring months of organization and preparation to reach millions of children around the world.

"This airlift was a unique opportunity for the project to reach children in poverty, regardless of the season," said Graham.
